A week ago, someone broke into a server at the University of East Anglia and left with a series of emails and other climate data from the University Research Unit. This aroused lots of deniers of climate change, as they have long claimed that RAW had secret evidence that global warming was not happening, or something. Commentary network much followed, in which a so-called "sample" of these e-mails have been widely disseminated and dissected publicly.
My first thought on reading this was not about climate change and the ensuing storm of BS on this. I thought about the privacy of scientists, now in tatters.I know I saw the email, like most scientists. In addition to work-related e-mails, I am sure that the server containing the private notes to loved ones by researchers and family, e-mail receipts for personal purchases, and a host of other content not intended to be distributed to the public or even their life circles. The violation of privacy is appalling, and I lost all respect for all those who commented on the incident without noting even the underlying crime and violation of the discussions involved the most intimate of these people.
